About the Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)
The Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) is a herding dog that originated in the Shetland Islands of Scotland. It was recognized by the AKC in 1909 as a breed. The breed standard for Shetland Sheepdogs is a minimum of 13 inch height, not to exceed 16 inches, They come in several popular colors including Sable, Tri color, Blue Merle, bi-blue, bi-black, sable merle and black/tan.
I started raising and showing Shetland Sheepdogs under the tutelage of Paul Hannah some 30 years ago. Lifes twists and turns took me away for several years, but I was able to come back to it 25 years ago.
Shelties don’t have too many health issues as long as they come from health tested parents that have had their OFA and breed specific blood testing done.
Shetland Sheepdogs are highly intelligent and need a good amount of stimulation to be happy pets, whether it be long walks or obedience training or even fly ball or many of the other dog sports that are available so readily today.
Dr. Stanley Coren, an expert of animal intelligence found the Sheltie to be one of the brightest dogs, in his studies it took fewer than five repetitions for a Sheltie to obey a basic command 95% of the time.
Shetland Sheepdogs make excellent family dogs, often herding children around for mom or just quietly watching to make sure they don’t wander off.
We have shown our Shelties to several APRI Championships and enjoy getting them out to show off.
